Younger Americans are much more likely to approve of interracial dating and to have dated someone from a different racial or ethnic background.

Gallup's annual Minority Rights and Relations poll delved into the topic of interracial dating to see whether Americans approve or disapprove of whites and blacks dating.

“It shows that people show some level of disgust based on the [national] polls saying that everything is fine,” said Allison Skinner, lead author and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington, who published the study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

Skinner said the students at the Midwestern university may not be representative of the entire nation, but she added that their feelings are “probably not exclusively a Nebraska thing.” About 1 in 8 people who married in 2013 tied the knot with someone of a different race, according to a Pew analysis of American Community Survey data.

Men and those who attended racially or ethnically integrated schools were significantly more likely to interdate. But a study by George Yancey, a sociologist at the University of North Texas, found that interdating today is far from unusual and certainly more common than intermarriage.Yancey collected a sample of 2,561 adults age 18 and older from the Lilly Survey of Attitudes and Friendships, a telephone survey of English- and Spanish-speaking adults conducted from October 1999 to April 2000.GALLUP NEWS SERVICE PRINCETON, NJ -- Most Americans say they approve of interracial dating.Even though a majority of whites approve, they are somewhat less likely to approve of interracial dating than are blacks or Hispanics.Yancey says that whites might interdate less because they are a numerical majority within American society.
